Raili Jänese

she/her . Woodinville and Kirkland, WA

@railijanese . railijanese.art/links

Bio:

I am a visual art and design fanatic, a self-taught artist from Estonia. After moving to Seattle in 2018, I started creating artwork about the subject I am deeply interested in - a living creature. I capture simplified animal postures with clean lines and vibrant colors, creating different compositions and patterns.

Artist Statement:

I am interested in the moment when you meet an animal, it does not run away but takes a decent look at you instead. I take the animal image from the described moment and set it free from all excessive details. Only a few characteristics are left, which will form repeated patterns and compositions complemented by vibrant colors.

Claire Donaldson

@picturemonger . clairedonaldson.art

Bio:

Claire checked out an illustrated book of mythology from the library in second grade and never really got over it. She enjoys chicken-tending, writing riddles with friends, and swimming in the Sound when it's not a sewage-based health hazard. She's a morning person because it's filled with coffee and potential.

Artist Statement:

Claire is most inspired by nature and myth in her work. Both are useful tools when exploring ideas through metaphor. In the case of mythology, she is interested in exploring the human experience behind our stories. She believes there are some things that can't be said out right without losing the true meaning, but instead must be circled like toothy animals. Regardless of the subject matter, that is Claire's goal as a creator. To amble around a point of interest in whatever medium suits her.

Tori LaZelle

she/her . Seattle, WA

@Artist_Tori . http://torilazelle.art

As a Queer woman I am constantly drawn to the tension between public and private. Home continues to play a huge part in my work as it is a place that I feel most comfortable but also at times the most confined. The absurd conflict of what is expected as a woman, these double standards, these ridiculous and sometimes harmful realities are the tension in my work.

Female and non-traditional bodies/gender taboos like sex, being sexual, being nude are played in my art. Continuing to question my own identity through multilayered pieces that on the surface can be something simple as a domestic still life, floral, or what is traditionally associated with woman and home.

Bio:

Alaina started the Living Artists Collective in late 2019 to help more artists spend more time playing creatively. She studied at Cornish College of the Arts (class of 2015), where a fascination with intricacy led to investigating time-intensive mediums like embroidery, oil painting, and representational drawing. These days her time is spent digging in her yard, organizing LAC programs, and scrambling around in the nuances of her art practice.

Artist Statement:

I am interested in the detail and poetry of natural things. My work often depicts figures, food, and flora, the grace and awkwardness of living things a stark comparison with the stillness of bones or dried flowers. It is a study in progressing time. A love for memento mori still life paintings inspires my subject choices, as I invite the viewer to question the narrative behind their placement, presentation, and colors.

My portraits are both intimate and remote at the same time; they are a mirror looking back at me. Each piece is an attempt to find an equilibrium.  Often, the subjects I choose to paint feel like a pop culture reference, but they are balanced with strong technique and heavy art history references.  Finding equilibrium is important to me.  I come from two different cultures: Peruvian and Italian.  I need to find a way for both sides of myself to co-exist.

Andrea Paz

she/her/elle (spanish they/them). Seattle, WA

@musaapollinis . nellarosmarino

Bio:

A Salvadoran stranded in Seattle, I’m a mixed-media artist who collects poetic language, expressive drawings, speculative stories, and dreamy photographs. Mirroring the behaviors of my ADHD, I cannot resist new mediums and experimenting, resulting in hypermedia with a divergent spirit. I am also a DJ and budding musician.

In a studio class, I was asked, “what is the medium of my project?” and as seconds passed, expecting eyes on me, I blurted out “mixed media!”

Artist Statement:

In the words of Audre Lodre, “poetry is not a luxury.” And neither is art! My through line of art is excising the emotions of that cannot be expressed in any other way. Because of this, my philosophy is that taking a new medium does not mean I abandon another, but yet another tool in my artist toolkit—which is why I work in multi/hypermedia. As a nerd…I love combining research and art—research creation, currently studying the power of narrative therapy.

Alex Sylvester

he/him. Kent, WA

@alexanderjsylvester . alexanderjsylvester.com

Bio:

Alex Sylvester is a Washington based artist with a varied history in practices and mediums. Originally focused as a filmmaker up and through his late 20's, he began to experiment with other forms of expression between photography tinted with digital manipulation/glitches as well as drawing in traditional mediums, primarily ink and colored pencil. Inspired primarily by a wide array of music, contemporary visual artists and a dash of psychedelia, Alex's art aims to express and inspire the individuals introspective journey.

Artist Statement:

I feel very connected to my art and the process that comes with it. I am someone who spends a lot of time in his own head, poking and prodding at my thoughts, emotions and the space between. In light of this, I've always needed some sort of conduit for expression, and acts of artistic creation became the most powerful and effective way to fill that need. Drawing in particular has taken the drivers seat in recent years as I've really began to delve into a stream-of-consciousness like approach; allowing ideas to sort of spill out until they can mature and be full realized. I'm as well a big fan of experimentation and pushing boundaries, which is what lead me on this path in the first place. Ultimately, through my own personal journey and experiences, I hope to connect to other humans in a way that may be as healing as it was for myself when creating the art.

Hannah Lake

she/her . Seattle, WA

@han_solocat . hannahlake.art

Bio:

Hannah is a painter based in Seattle, Washington. Originally hailing from the Columbia Basin with its rolling hills and enormous sky, she now enjoys exploring the innumerable fascinating nooks, crannies, and incredible skyline vistas the city has to offer. When she’s not painting, she can be found making coffee for all of Cornish College of the Arts (she’s a barista there) or playing with her two spooky black kittens, Halloweenie and Derek Acorah.

Artist Statement:

I paint the magic I see in my surroundings, my loved ones, and the worlds we make and inhabit. Much of my work centers around the quiet moments of beauty to be found in everyday life. As the pace of life increases and we collectively become less and less connected to the physical world, I believe slowing down enough to experience those moments has possibly never been more important. My painting practice serves as an antidote to the anxious state of mind too much screen time always induces. A seemingly never-ending stream of contextless information is replaced with the relieving clarity that comes from intensely focusing on a single beautiful, tangible image.

I have exhibited in galleries back home in Indiana but currently trying to lay a framework for connection here in Seattle.

Artist Statement:

I paint figures that make beautiful my own vulnerabilities. I sing about what makes me blush. This is me connecting in the way I know how. For these parts we tend to hide, they too have a desire to be known. They have a desire to be assured. "You are not alone in feeling."

Sebastian Petersen

Bio:

Mixed-media sculptor and illustrator, born into a half Middle-eastern refugee family (Armenian fleeing the Lebanese Civil War), half san Francisco Artist family. Studied fine art at the San Francisco Art Institute for two and a half years, and graduated with an Illustration BFA at The California College of the Arts in 2022. My passion has always been finding ways to express narratives and experience new ways of learning through art. I draw a lot from my family heritage and personal history to find playful manners in which to make art.

Artist Statement:

My practice focusses on non-linear storytelling, provoking curiosity through novel experiences, experimentation with materials, and documentation as an art. I approach art as branch of the social sciences. I make work to explore ideas and present them as opportunities for others to explore as well - in hopes that they will find new and meaningful ways to express themselves. I'm not hyper critical or a perfectionist, as I find I get the most enjoyment out of learning involved, not the completion or external perception.

In the final pieces I often see the elements of folk tales and stories that I love returned to me. I work in the moment. Bio: Anna Baldi is an artist based in Seattle, Washington. Anna received their BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2018, with a focus in painting and sculpture. Their artistic practice explores human-animal relationships, reproductive labor, and how these topics fit into a world of rapidly evolving technology. Outside of art making, Anna has also worked as an educator in both Seattle and Pittsburgh.

Statement: I am an artist animal figuring out how to eat, sleep, shit, and reproduce within the Anthropocene. Through my art practice, I merge human and non-human bodies through violent and sexual acts that ask us to rethink our position and power within the supposed hierarchy of living things. When someone interacts with my work, my intention is to make them uncomfortably aware of their body. Through this realization of our fragility, we can begin to truly collaborate with the inhabitants of our planet, and our collective experience can merge into action.
